چکیده

J-FOR Journal of Science & Technology for Forest Products and Processes: VOL.1, NO.2, 2011 38 To a great extent, the design of large forest products facilities has been based on the assumptions of stable future wood costs and species mix. Mill design and wood supply are dealt with as separate, although connected, calculations. This is essentially an agricultural model in which supply is available at a relatively constant rate and is spread uniformly over the supply area. This paper questions this assumption, contrasting it to the situation in the mineral industries, in which there is an intimate connection between mill capacity and production rate and the definition of the resource, with complex cost structures that depend on the planned schedule of resource exploitation. Policy Capacity for Health Reform: Necessary but Insufficient; Comment on “Health Reform Requires Policy Capacity”

Forest and colleagues have persuasively made the case that policy capacity is a fundamental prerequisite to health reform. They offer a comprehensive life-cycle definition of policy capacity and stress that it involves much more than problem identification and option development. I would like to offer a Canadian perspective. If we define health reform as re-orienting the health system from acut...

A simple planning system for sustainable timber harvesting in Papua New Guinea

Planning and management of forest resources in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has sometimes resulted in overcutting, resource depletion, unintended environmental impacts and uncertainty about the long-term capacity of forests to supply the future needs of local communities or industry. Sound inventory and planning are critical for sustainable forest management. Good systems are in place in PNG to deter...

A column generation algorithm for tactical timber transportation planning

We present a tactical wood flow model that appears in the context of the Canadian forestry industry, and describe the implementation of a decision support system created for use by an industrial partner. In this problem, mill demands and harvested volumes of a heterogeneous set of log types are given over a multi-period planning horizon. Wood can be stored at the forest roadside prior to delive...
